Why Google Keep Notes?

Anyone who knows me would probably tell you that I have a bit of a passion for finding little life hacks for being more productive, and Google Keep Notes in no exception!

As someone with a background in mental health, it wold be my inclination to say that this passion can likely be chalked up to the fact that I was anything but organized growing up.

I am a procrastinator at heart, and so as part of my journey in personal growth, I have had to learn ways to keep myself accountable for my time and to find ways to manage it better.

As a result, I have adopted many different platforms in my journey, such as:

  • Wunderlist
  • Todoist
  • Evernote

Now, while all of the above have been found to be very useful, each serve a slightly different purpose, and I really like the simplicity of Google Keep Notes.

Motivation Matters

When it comes to being motivated, I often hear people say “I just don’t feel motivated”, as if it is some spontaneous combustion that occurs for some but not others.

The truth in the matter is that inspiration and intention proceed motivation, and really, motivation is only born out of an outcome of identified progress, in that which we initially set out to accomplish before we are motivated.

Why is this relevant?

Because of the motivational triad: Pain Avoidance, Pleasure Seeking, and our star of the show….Energy Conservation, or commonly referred to as Convenience!

While I have used and loved many organizational tools, Google Keep Notes is by far my favorite, because of its ease of use.

I can quickly create a note, label it, color coordinate it, and even turn it into a checklist! I can even send it to Google Docs and print it out from there, as I often do when creating Chore lists for my daughter.

I find that I am often inspired with ideas when I am not sitting and thinking about ways to be inspired.

It is when I am doing the dishes, or laundry and listening to podcasts or taking a shower, that I find myself in that Alpha-State of mind, and it is at these moments it is crucial that I am able to quickly jot-down my thoughts for future reference, and Google Keep Notes is the perfect tool for the job.

Google Keep Notes quickly syncs across mobil and desktop platforms, allowing me to work in whichever environment is most suitable.

Why is this relevant to mental health?

The thing about mental health, is that our self-esteem is intrinsically tied to our sense of adequacy and capabilities, or what psychology coins as “Internal Locus of Control.”

It is the convergence of our self-concept and self-in-context.

You see, satisfaction comes from making plans, and then seeing those plans come to fruition.

This is why in therapy, there is so much goal-talk around behavioral activation, or the repetitious dialogue around stating, revisiting and measuring reasonable, meaningful, and time sensitive goals.

We cannot neglect that doing things on purpose, and for a purpose, is crucial to our personal development and overall mental health.

That is not to say that every minute should be accounted for and planned out, but rather that we are putting our attention to intention. Much like Dave Ramsey’s statement about money, the goal is to get in the habit of telling our time where to go, so we are not left wondering where it went; this fosters a sense of empowerment, rather than subordination in our stations of life.

Well, there you have it, another tool for your toolbox.

Try it out, let me know what you think in the comments.
